Sex Times in Islam

Sex is allowed in Islam only between married couples. Other than that, Islam is actually a very open religion when it comes to sex. Yes, having sex is for procreation, but it is also for pleasure. So are there any times when a man and his wife cannot have sex? When are the best sex times in Islam? Karaz’s Yousef gives you the breakdown.

Basically, as long as you’re married, a couple can enjoy sex whenever they want. There are three categories when it comes to the timing and days for when sex should be had or avoided; forbidden times, makruh times and recommended times.

Forbidden Times to Have Sex (aka No Sex Times in Islam)

In Islam, it is forbidden to have sex with one’s wife during menstruation.

The Qur’an says: They ask you about menstruation. Say: Menstruation is a discomfort (for women). Do not establish sexual relations with them during the menses and do not approach them (sexually) until the blood stops. Then when they have cleansed themselves, you go into them as Allah has commanded you.” (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:222)

So basically, as long as the wife is on her period, avoid the area from her navel to her knees.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be intimate. Foreplay, kissing, cuddling—all of that goes. So until the bleeding stops, enjoy other forms of intimacy. And once her period is done, and she does Ghusl, resume normal activity!

Sexual intercourse is also forbidden during post-natal bleeding (this is called nifas and lasts a maximum of 10 days), as well as during the daytime during Ramadan, and when a person is doing their pilgrimage to Mecca.

Times when Sexual Intercourse is makruh (i.e-not explicitly forbidden, but not accepted 100% either…so, not the best sex times in Islam):
1. During frightful natural occurrences, e.g., eclipse, hurricane, earthquake;

  1. From sunset tillmaghrib;
  2. From dawn till sunrise;
  3. The last three nights of lunar months;
  4. Eve of the 15th of every lunar month;
  5. Eve of 10thZil-hijjah;
  6. After becoming junub.

Time When Sex is Recommended (aka Best Sex Times in Islam)

According to certain ahadith, there are certain times that are better to enjoy sexual intercourse, including;
1. Sunday night;

  1. Monday night;
  2. Wednesday night;
  3. Thursday noon;
  4. Thursday night;
  5. Friday evening;
  6. Whenever the wife wants to have sex.

So use that as an excuse to have more sex during those times! And remember, a married couple has to at LEAST have sex once every 4 months in Islam (this is wajib)…otherwise there’s a major problem that must be addressed.
